Minneapolis continues its golden run of producing quality talent with the first project to arrive out the Gayngs collective, the super slick electronic pop-soul outfit Poliça. Fronted by ice cool vocalist Channy Leanagh who sang with Gayngs, produced by Ryan Olson and featuring Mike Noyce from Bon Iver, it’s a who’s who of the current Twin Cities scene.

Continuing the tradition of having friends in high places with Prince and Kanye West among Gayngs fans, Poliça have already been backed by none other than Jay Z who posted their video for the new for single ‘Lay Your Cards Out’ on his Life + Times blog: http://lifeandtimes.com/lifetimes-video-premier-polica-lay-your-cards-outThe result is 11 perfectly formed auto-tuned songs that re-shape the intersection of pop and digitised R&B. And for all Poliça’s synthetic manipulation, Channy’s soft vocals and Ryan’s electronic soundscapes reveal a tender heart beneath, pulsating with life and raw emotion. First sashaying single proper ‘Lay Your Cards Out’ features Mike Noyce of Bon Iver on vocals and is equally as deliciously funk laden as it is hypnotic, with more ratatat drums from Ben Ivascu and Drew Christopherson, propelling the lush arrangements and slinky bass, provided by Chris Bierden.

The name Poliça refers to the word ‘policy’, meaning a definite course of action adopted for the sake of expediency, suggesting they were formed out of necessity. Which is exactly how this album feels and sounds; urgent, original and genre defying, Poliça are absolutely essential in 2012.

Poliça will be playing a handful of shows at this year’s SXSW, more details to follow soon.

** THE KABEEDIES Rory, Fab, Katie and Evan. With their childhood roots in both Norfolk and Suffolk they are the biggest thing to come out of East Anglia since Stephen Fry’s colossal brain.
** ‘Soap’ is their second album, and their first release on fierce panda following on from their 2009 debut album ‘Rumpus’ which, as the title may suggest, was a fizzbanging collage of yelps and twangs and jumpy artrocking angles which – to some sage old ears anyway - came across not entirely unlike Claire Grogan fronting The Futureheads. It was generally described as being ‘insanely life-affirming’, got voted number 9 in Artrocker’s top albums of the year and kick started a touring schedule which saw near
riots at Latitude and Hamburg’s Dockville Festivals and hectic live shows with Everything Everything, Darwin Deez, Hurts and CSS.
** That was then. And this, as they say, is now. “We’re not writing songs as fifteen year olds anymore,” says Rory. True, there are still moments of twitchy fun to be had (cf previous singles ‘Come Out Of The Blue’ and ‘Santiago’) but elsewhere ‘Soap’ is the relative calm after the bubblegum storm of ‘Rumpus’. There are touches of Paul Simon’s more sombre moods, a flourish of grown up brass here, a soupcon of morose strings there and some songs with titles like ‘Bones’ and ‘Drowning Doll’. Oh, and then it
gets really introspective and weird in ‘Underfloor Lover’.

Opvolger van zeer succesvolle debuut album Ghost uit 2007 van singer-songwriter Ben Cooper alias Radical Face. Waar Ghost veel verstilde gitaar/piano/ingetogen liedjes bevatte, in de regio van bv Elliott Smith of Bright Eyes, is het nieuwe album veel voller, meer orkestraal geproduceerd. Adembenemend mooie indie folk pop songs met prachtige strijkers vormen het eerste deel in een trilogie die verhaalt over een fictieve familie door de generaties heen. Radical Face is niet bepaald een onbekende nieuwkomer meer te noemen. Het nummer Welcome Home is al meer dan 7,5 miljoen keer bekeken op Youtube. Het is tevens de soundtrack van I Am Nikon reclame en is te horen in films zoals Humboldt County, The Vicious Kind en the Reel Rock Documentary. The Family Tree Presents The Roots zou zo maar de definitieve doorbraak voor Radical Face kunnen betekenen.

Creature With The Atom Brain op tournee met Mark Lanegan

Creature With The Atom Brain, de band van Millionaire-lid Aldo Struyf die zich eerder al uitnodigingen van o.a. The Dead Weather (UK/Europa) en Alice In Chains (USA/Canada) mocht laten welgevallen, kan opnieuw een mooie Europese tournee in het vooruitzicht stellen. Deze keer zullen ze de support verzorgen voor Mark Lanegan op een tournee van maar liefst 28 optredens in 13 landen.

Creature’s eerste volwaardige album 'I Am The Golden Gate Bridge' verscheen in 2007 op het Munich label en werd een mix van scherpe, explosieve en melodische songs met gastvocalen van Tim Vanhamel en - niet toevallig dus - Mark Lanegan. In 2009 verscheen de opvolger ‘Transylvania’ waarop Lanegan opnieuw een gastbijdrage leverde. Voor de mix van dat laatste album werd overigens niemand minder dan Chris Goss opgezocht; de man achter Masters Of Reality en producer van prima albums van Kuyss en Queens Of The Stone Age. Het pareltje kwam niet enkel uit in de Benelux (Munich Records) maar ook in de USA en de meeste Europese landen (The End).

Intussen is het ook uitkijken naar de release van het derde album van Creature With The Atom Brain. De eerste opnames zijn net afgerond en we verwachten een release kort voor de zomer.

Inhabiting their own beautifully dark, ethereal corner of the musical universe, poised somewhere at the crossroads between the nocturnal, rolling soundscapes of Angelo Badalamenti and the sublime, naive melodies of 50s pop, Trailer Trash Tracys are a deliciously unique proposition.

Recorded by the band themselves on a “solfeggio scale” – a scale to which, apparently, western guitars and pianos are not pitched to – Ester is an ambitious achievement that marries an experimental urge with a love for the standards and classics of pop eternal.

The freeform intro “Rolling - Kiss The Universe” leads us into Trailer Trash Tracys’ own otherworldy sonic space in which their ideas play freely. Deep and hazy sonic textures drift around singer Suzanne Aztoria’s gossamer light vocals, which sound as though they were beamed from another dimension, evoking a sensual, yet unnerving tension. The album progresses to reveal ever expanding possibilities, running the gamut from the spiralling guitar shreds of “Engelhardt’s Arizona” to the gloriously seductive and brooding pop of "You Wish You Were Red”, out to the delicate, pinprick orchestrations of “Starlatine”. The smouldering slow-burn of “Turkish Heights”, meanwhile, closes the album in poignant style, romantic, dreamy and sincere, revealing a tender heart beating indelibly inside the machine.

With “Ester”, the inimitable world of Trailer Trash Tracys is brought to haunting, vivid life (in a visual sense as well, with Kurt Ralske responsible for the artwork) – a little off-kilter, a little askew, but nothing less than utterly beguiling and completely memorable. Treasure them now.

E Volo Love (which is a palindrome), is comprised of eleven elegant, fragile, velvet-plush songs on an album that is heart-meltingly delicate, enchanting and otherworldly. Delicately poised between sunnily feel-good and wistfully melancholy, E Volo Love has a poignant, end-of-summer feel to it. The grand theme on this dual-language album – sung in both French and English – is simply love.

E Volo Love was written whilst Fránçois Marry surfed, cycled and wandered through the countryside, and was recorded in a church in Saintes, his hometown near La Rochelle in south west France.

The album’s hot buttered sound comes from its wide range of influences, from French chanson, traditional indie pop and Aphex Twin to African and Middle Eastern sounds, which can be heard in particular on Les Plus Beaux and Do You Want To Dance, which bookend the album. The album was mixed by Tinariwen’s studio bod, Jean-Paul Romann.

Texture and mood dominate thanks to slowly ebbing arrangements, elastic rhythms, seamless twists and turns such as Piscine’s chanson-into-house music tack, heavy doses of elegant French drama, and a soft gaze of electronics. Released as the first single on 7^th November, Piscine yearns nostalgically for the past, and for lost afternoons at a small-town swimming-pool from Fránçois’ youth.

BED RUGS – WHAT DOES IT MEAN

Door de afwezigheid van zowel The Beatles als de grunge gaapte er jarenlang een gigantische krater in het muzieklandschap. Jarenlang hebben we moeten wachten op die ene band die op hun beurt de grens zou verleggen en het perfecte evenwicht vindt tussen bloedeerlijke popsongs en met wat subtiele psychedelica afgekruid gitaargeweld.

Uit de assen van Rock Rally-finalisten The Porn Bloopers groeide het idee om het vuurwerk van scheurende gitaren wat te finetunen tot helemaal afgewerkte songs. In dezelfde bezetting (Yannick Aerts, Stijn Boels, Arne Omloop en Noah Melis) herdoopten ze zich Bed Rugs, met een vette knipoog naar ondergezeken tapijt in de film The Big Lebowski. Het eerste resultaat van hun harde werk werd de single WHAT DOES IT MEAN als voorsmaakje op hun door Pascal Deweze (Metal Molly, Sukilove, Broken Glass Heroes) geproducete plaat. Revolver van The Beatles weerklinkt maar ook hun andere helden als Grandaddy, Sparklehorse, The Flaming Lips en Imaad Wasif zijn nooit ver af.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN werd een verrassende combinatie van indie, pop en sixties psychedelica.

Field Music (a.k.a. Sunderland, England, siblings Peter and David Brewis) release their fourth album, Plumb, through Memphis Industries in February

2012 (13 Feb).The album, recorded over the course of 2011 at their new studio on the banks of the river Wear in Sunderland, comprises 15 songs in a succinct 35 minutes. It largely abandons the 'classic' song writing conventions embraced on their 2010 double album Measure and instead remodels the modular, fragmented style of the first two Field Music albums; only now shot through with the surreal abstractions of 20th century film music from Bernstein to Willy Wonka and with the off-beam funk and pristine synth-rock developed on the brothers' School of Language and The Week That Was albums.
